The Indian Football 2021-2022 season is coming closer day by day. With now that the transfer window has opened earlier this month (June), the teams from different Indian football leagues are busy building a strong squad for the coming season.
The Indian Football calendar was quite different from its original calendar last season due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The major tournaments like Durand Cup, Super Cup were not held due to the above reason.

However, with the COVID-19 2nd wave is now slowly slowly decreasing, it is being reported that the Indian Football 2021-2022 season will start with the historic Durand Cup. However, ATK Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC will start their season in the Asian 2nd tier competition AFC Cup, that is to be held in August.
History of Durand Cup
Durand Cup is one of the most oldest tournament in the World today, behind England's FA Cup and Scotland's Scottish Cup. It is the oldest tournament in both India and Asia.
The tournament is named after the founder Mortimer Durand and was founded in 1888. The tournament is organised by the Durand Football Tournament Society.
Kolkata giants and India's two of the most oldest clubs, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have won the trophy the joint most, 16 times. While, Kerala's Gokulam Kerala is the defending champion. Gokulam Kerala won the Durand Cup in 2019 by defeating Mohun Bagan in the final.
Durand Cup 2021
The Indian Football's governing body, the All India Football Federation and the Durand Cup organizing body held a meeting earlier where they discussed the possibility of holding the legacy tournament.
When will the Durand Cup 2021 be played ?
Both the parties during the meeting reportedly came into a conclusion that the Durand Cup 2021 will be played in the month of September, 2021.
Where will the Durand Cup 2021 be played ?
The organizing committee have also reportedly decided to hold the complete tournament in Kolkata. Last edition of Durand Cup (2019) was also played in Kolkata.
Teams in Durand Cup 2021
The organizing body have decided that the top four clubs from Indian Super League 2020-2021 season and I-League champions and runners-up will be invited to participate in the competition.
The four Indian Super League teams will be Mumbai City FC, ATK Mohun Bagan, NorthEast United and FC Goa. Gokulam Kerala and Churchill Brothers will be the 2 I-League teams.
It is also believed that the other 2 Kolkata giants SC East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting Club will also be invited because them being from Kolkata and legacy clubs of India. While the remaining 2 slots will be filled with teams from the Army, Navy or the Air Force.
