The Indian football Under-16 team is set to start its SAFF U16 Championship 2023 campaign today when the India U16 team will take on the Bangladesh U16 team in the SAFF Championship U16 tournament opening match.

After the previous Indian U17 team were knocked-out of the U17 Asian Cup game despite doing well, it's now time for the new batch of the U16 team to do well and qualify for the Asian Cup U17 tournament for the 2024 edition of the tournament.
A new batch of the India U16 team was formed after intensive scouting around various regions in the country. Former India international player and former Kerala Blasters FC assistant coach Ishfaq Ahmed has been appointed as the new head coach of the team after previous coach Bibiano Fernandes joined Bengaluru FC's youth team.
Under the guidance of the head coach, the Indian U16 football team held a month long camp in Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir where they also played a friendly match against local club Real Kashmir, who plays in the I-League and eventually beat them.
The SAFF Championship U16 tournament will be held in Bhutan's Thimphu, which has somewhat similar weather conditions as Srinagar, the reason for All India Football Federation (AIFF) decision to hold the camp in Srinagar.
A couple of days back, the Indian football team officially announced the list of players who have been selected for the SAFF U16 Championship campaign. In the tournament, the Indian team will play against Bangladesh on the 2nd of September and Nepal on the 6th of September. While India's group includes India, Bangladesh and Nepal, the other group has Bhutan, Pakistan and Maldives. The top two from each group will then qualify for the semi-finals of the SAFF U16 Championship 2023.
