This is the 2nd Trophy that the Indian team has won in the last 1 month after recently winning the Hero Intercontinental Cup in Odisha.
The Indian team were drawn in Group A of the SAFF Championship alongside Pakistan, Nepal and Kuwait. The Blue Tigers got the better of arch-rival Pakistan and had to work hard to get the better of Nepal. The 3rd match against Kuwait ended in draw thanks to a own goal from Indian defender Anwar Ali in injury time.
In the Semi-final, India beat the Lebanon football team in the penalty shootout to book a slot into the final of the SAFF Championship 2023.
The match started off with both teams taking chances at each other. But it was Kuwait who scored the first goal around the 15th minute mark. Team India equalised through Lallianzuala Chhangte in the 40th minute of the match.
The 2nd half was a brilliant action pack show, but no goals came and the story remained the same throughout the extra-time. India won the match in the penalty shootout with Gurpreet Singh Sandhu saving the penalty of the Kuwait football team captain to give India a 5-4 win in the penalty shootout.
