Mumbai City FC suffered a frustrating defeat in their opening match of the AFC Champions League 2023-2024 against the debutant team FC Nassaji Mazandaran by 2-0 scoreline. Mumbai City FC completely dominated the match but lacked a finisher.
Mumbai City FC were tied with FC Nassaji Mazandaran from Iran in their first match of the AFC Champions League 2023-2024 season. Mumbai City had a great dominance throughout the match, but they lacked a goal scorer with good finisher at the top. Lallianzuala Chhangte got several opportunities but lacked the finishing.
In the end, a goal in the 34th minute against the run of play from Nassaji Mazandaran player Ehsan Hosseini gave the Iranian club the lead in the match. They added another goal in the 2nd half, this time their striker Mohammadreza Azadi was on target, that proved the decisive goal for Nassaji Mazandaran in the end.
Mumbai City FC completely dominated FC Nassaji Mazandaran in the first half, giving the visitors no chance to settle down as Mumbai launched attack after attack on the Iranian team's goal. While several chances were easily dealt by the Nassaji player, some chances needed a better find touch.
It was Indian winger Lallianzuala Chhangte who came the closest to give Mumbai City FC the lead in the match when his shot from an accute angle down the right, missed the far post by a wisker. Still, Mumbai created several chances, never got the opportunity from the Nassaji players to put it past the keeper.
In the end, some brilliance from FC Nassaji Mazandaran captain Hossein Zamehran and Ehsan Hosseini gave lead to the Iranian club. Zamehran played a brilliant through ball pass the Mumbai defence and Ehsan scored a brilliant goal at the 34th minute of the match.
In th first 10 minutes of the 2nd half, Mumbai City FC created 2 brilliant chances, but one shot by Lallianzuala Chhangte was blocked by Nassaji player while Chhangte found offside in the 2nd opportunity. But, FC Nassaji Mazandaran made most of Mumbai's failure to get a goal as they doubled their lead in the 62nd minute when Mohammadreza Azadi tapped in Nassaji's 2nd goal.
After that, both teams created several chances, especially the hosts Mumbai City FC, who just like the first-half, didn't had the final product to get the ball behind the net. Chhangte came close to score for Mumbai again when his header went completely wide from a cross whipped in by Greg Stewart.
The 2nd half continued like that where lack of finishing punished Mumbai and despite creating chances, they failed to score a goal in the match. There were 9 minutes of added time after the regular 90 minutes were completed. Again Mumbai created opportunities, but no one was there who could the find the back of the net as the match ended 2-0 in favour of the visitors FC Nassaji Mazandaran.
