The Indian football season officially begins from the 21st of September with the Indian Super League starting with the opening match between the Kerala Blasters FC and the Bengaluru FC. But before that, some Indian clubs, namely Mumbai City FC, Odisha FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, will play their first round of the matches in the AFC Champions League and the AFC Cup 2023-2024 season.
Continental football is once again back and a total of 3 Indian clubs will be taking part in the Asian continental competitions this season.
Mumbai City FC, who won the ISL League Winners' Shield and beat Jamshedpur FC in a playoff match, will be representing India in the continent's top tier competition AFC Champions League 2023-2024 season. The club from Mumbai have been grouped with the likes of FC Nassaji Mazandaran, Navbahor and Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, who have Brazilian star Neymar Jr in their squad.
Meanwhile, Odisha FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant will play in the AFC Cup 2023-2024 season. Odisha FC qualified for the competition after winning the Hero Super Cup, while Mohun Bagan Super Giant qualified thanks to winning the ISL Final and beating previous season's ISL winner Hyderabad FC in a playoff match. Mohun Bagan had to further go through playoff round where they beat Macchindra and Dhaka Abahani to qualify for the group stage.
With a total of 3 Indian clubs set to take part in the AFC Champions Cup, first round to be played between the 18th and 20th September, and AFC Cup, first round to be played between the 18th to 21st September, the Indian football fans are quite excited about Indian clubs' performance in the competition.
