Chennaiyin FC sign Lazar Cirkovic Indian Super League 2023-2024

Indian Super League (ISL) club Chennaiyin FC have today officially confirmed the signing of former Serbia U21 International defender Lazar Cirkovic, who is currently a free agent after leaving Hungarian club Budapest Honvéd FC earlier this summer.

With the Indian Super League set to kick-off on the 21st of the September, Chennai based club Chennaiyin FC were yet to sign a foreign defender in the team. Lazar Cirkovic has become the club's first foreign centre-back signing this season. The club is also expected to sign another foreign player, who is also likely to be a defender.

Lazar Cirkovic is a 31-years-old former Serbia U21 national team player who began his career with the Serbian clubs FK Partizan and FK Rad youth setup. He was a part of the latter club for four years from 2010 till 2014 before once again switching to join FK Partizan, one of the most well known club in Serbia.

He join Partizan in 2014 and remained an integral part of the club till January 2018 before making a move to join Switzerland based FC Luzern. He then joined Israeli club Maccabi Netanya in February 2020 but was released in the summer. He then had to wait till January 2021 to find his next destination when he joined Kisvárda in Hungary. The following year, summer 2022, Cirkovic then joined another Hungarian club Budapest Honvéd FC.

Chennaiyin FC is very much known for bringing players from leagues the fans not expecting from. While the most of the ISL clubs focuses on Australia and Spanish market, Chennaiyin have always done out of the box and they have got good result. Thus, Chennaiyin FC fans will be hoping that their new defender is a hit in that backline.

Chennaiyin FC will start its Indian Super League 2023-2024 campaign against Odisha FC away from home on the 23rd of September.

Chennaiyin FC have been really active in the transfer market this season. The club sold their biggest asset and club captain Anirudh Thapa for a massive transfer fee to Mohun Bagan Super Giant and brought in Ayush Adhikari as his replacement. Other than, the club resigned star midfielder Rafael Crivellaro who will be partnered by Cristian Battocchio. Meanwhile, the forward line will be lead by Connor Shields and Jordan Murray

The club has also signed Farukh Choudhary from Jamshedpur FC, Ankit Mukherjee from East Bengal and one of the promising striker Irfan Yadwad from FC Bengaluru United. Meanwhile, the club has released all of its foreign players from last season going into the new season while former coach Owen Coyle is back at the helm, who lead the side to the final in the 2019-2020 season.
