The Indian football season has officially come an end as Delhi FC on the last day of the I-League 2 or I-League 2nd Division, beat the Ambernath United Atlanta FC to not only win the tournament by finishing top of the points table, they have also gained promotion to the Indian 2nd tier league, the I-League.
Delhi FC win I-League 2; Gets promoted to I-League 2023-2024
The Hero I-League 2 or also known as the I-League 2nd Division is the third tier of Indian football after the Indian Super League (ISL) and the I-League. With both the latter mentioned leagues having already finished earlier, the I-League 2 was the only running Indian national league that was left to be completed.
The 2nd Division League officially began on the 12th of February with 4 teams taking part in the Qualifiers. In the end, it was Shillong Lajong and Downtown Heroes qualifying for the main league phase.
A total of 19 teams took part in the 2nd Division League main phase with teams divided in 4 groups. From each group, the group topper qualified for the Playoffs while one 2nd best placed team qualified for the Playoffs too, making it 5 teams in the playoffs.
Shillong Lajong and Delhi FC promoted to I-League 2023-2024
In the end of it all, Shillong Lajong and Delhi FC have managed to get promoted to the I-League with Delhi FC winning the I-League 2 or 2nd Division League as the table topper in the playoffs while Shillong Lajong finished 2nd in the points table.
Shillong Lajong beat FC Bengaluru United 2-1 in their last playoff game to book themselves a place in the I-League. Meanwhile Delhi FC beat Ambernath United Atlanta FC to book their place not only for the I-League next season, but also book their place at the top of the points table and win the league.
Delhi FC won the match 3-1 with Bali Gagandeep scoring a brace while Vanlalhriatzuala scoring the other goal. Meanwhile captain Himanshu Patil scored the only goal for Ambernath United Atlanta FC.
