How to Become a Professional Football Coach in India

When it comes to Football coaches in India, the most popular names you will hear are Sanjoy Sen, the current ATK Mohun Bagan Indian assistant manager, Khalid Jamil, who is part of NorthEast United management, Clifford Miranda, Indian assistant manager of FC Goa, and there are more but all can't be mentioned here.

So, you here that means you might be wondering how can you become a football coach in India. Today in this article, we will take you through all the steps that will help you fulfil your dream of becoming a football coach in India.

As of writing this, there are 6 licenses available for those who aspire to become a football coach in India, it starts from AIFF ‘E’ certificate followed by AIFF ‘D’ certificate, AIFF ‘C’ certificate, AFC ‘B’ Diploma, AFC ‘A’ Diploma and then the main one is the AFC ‘Pro’ diploma license.

AIFF 'E' License

The very first step license that an aspiring coach needs to acquire is AIFF 'E' license. With this license, you will be eligible to coach in the age group competition such as the Golden Baby League and Futsal tournament. The minimum age requirement is 18 and it's a 4-day course. No assessment required while fee depends on the state association.

AIFF 'D' License

When you have achieved the 'E' license, then you will be eligible for AIFF 'D' license. With this license, you will be eligible to coach in state leagues, school tournaments. You also need to have at least 3 months of coaching experience before applying for this course. It is a 6-day course with the minimum age requirement is 18. The assessments for this course are written exam, session planning, preparing logbooks and 2 practical assessments. The AIFF charges 3000 INR plus an additional organisational cost to be paid to host state or organisation.

AIFF 'C' License

Next up is the AIFF 'C' license, but before applying for the course, the candidate must need to have coaching experience of 6 months. The candidates will be given the training to develop their skills and football techniques, the coaches/candidates will be taught organising, planning and executing their tactics on the training pitch. And finally, when the course is complete and the candidate has passed the course, he will be eligible for coaching youth teams and state league clubs. The candidates need to pass out three practical exams and two theoretical exams. The few for this license is 12500 INR and organisational fee need to be paid to the host state.

AFC 'B' Diploma

The next stage in your coaching journey is AFC 'B' Diploma. But after achieving the 'C' license, the coach must do coaching for 2 years before applying for this course. Under this course, the coaches will be taught about developing their playing style and managing a team. After the candidate passes this course, he will be eligible to coach youth teams and teams of different state leagues. The minimum age for this course is 20 years. The AIFF license fee is 15000 INR while an organisational fee has to be paid to the host.

AFC 'A' Diploma

So once you have achieved the AFC 'B' license, you then need to coach for one year to be eligible for this course. Under this course, the coaches will be trained on how to nurture leadership qualities, tactical abilities and technical abilities. After clearing this course, the coaches are allowed to coach I-League teams, state league clubs, youth teams and will also be allowed to be appointed as the assistant coach of any ISL clubs. The minimum age for this course is 18, and there is no fixed duration for the course. In terms of assessment, there will be 2 theoretical and 3 practical exams. The AIFF license fee for this course is 25000 INR and organisational fee to the host.

AFC 'PRO' Diploma

The final hurdle is the AFC 'Pro' license. But before you can apply for this course, you need to have coaching experience for a minimum of 2 years. Under this course, the coaches will be taught about managing professional clubs and national teams. With this license, the coach is allowed to become head coach of any ISL and I League teams. The minimum age is 18 and the course is 24 days long. You need to pay 50000 INR for AIFF license while an organisational fee has to be paid to the host.
