Indian Football Association (IFA), which governs football in West Bengal has made some big decisions to develop football in the North Bengal.
After a meeting at Siliguri on January 11, IFA secretary Mr. Joydeep Mukherjee announced in a press conference that IFA has decided to start a new football tournament by the name of Uttarbongo Cup, which will be contested by the teams from North Bengal such teams from Siliguri, Malda, Jalpaiguri.
The IFA secretary stated, “We are taking football to the grassroots and one of our decisions is to initiate the Uttorbongo Cup that would help bring out new talent in the districts of North Bengal.”
He also added that to improve football in the North Bengal region, the IFA has decided to set up an official IFA office in Siliguri. The football activities in the entire North Bengal region will be looked after by the IFA office in Siliguri.
They also revealed the plan of an Academy in Siliguri, and the main focus of the Academy will be to find the best goalkeeper. “We would go to the districts to bring out the best talents, we would set up an IFA academy here as well" added Joydeep Mukherjee.
Mr. Joydeep Mukherjee believes that there is a lot of hidden talents in the North Bengal and the IFA will try their best to discover those stars from the small villages to different cities of North Bengal.
