Andrey Chernyshov's and his Black and White Brigade Mohammedan Sporting Club had to work hard to get all 3 points against Churchill Brothers FC to take a huge 8 points lead at the top the I-League 2023-2024 season League standing.
Mohammedan SC have dominated this season in the Indian 2nd tier i.e. the I-League. But the Black Panthers were made to work hard to earn the crucial three points in their match against Goa based Churchill Brothers FC Goa.
It was a nightmare of a start when Mohammedan were dreaming about their I-League celebration as Stendly Teotonio Fernandes gave Churchill Brothers FC Goa the early lead in the match at the 9th minute of the match.
But it did not take long for the league leaders to stage a comeback. Mohammedan Sporting managed to equalize the score with a fantastic goal from their talisman Eddie Hernandez at the 28th minute of the match. Couple of minutes later, the Honduran striker found himself in front of the goal again as he completed his brace at the 32nd minute of the match and gave Mohammedan Sporting Club the lead in the match heading into the half-time break.
In the 2nd half, Uruguayan midfielder Martin Chaves brought Churchill Brothers FC back level at the 51st minute of the match from the penalty spot. Things were looking likely to be heading towards a draw but the hosts Mohammedan SC had different plan. It was a brilliant goal from Remsanga Fanai at the 75th minute of the match that in the end sealed the match for Mohammedan Sporting, despite some late pressure from Churchill Brothers FC.
With this win, Mohammedan Sporting Club have now taken a huge 8 points lead at the top of the I-League 2023-2024 points table over 2nd placed Sreenidi Deccan FC, although Sreenidi have played 18 matches while Mohammedan have played 19 matches.
Sreenidi Deccan FC will be in action on the 17th of March against Gokulam Kerala FC in a crucial match as anything other than a win for the Hyderabad based club will reduce their chances of winning the league by big margin, although Mohammedan Sporting Club are almost on the brink of becoming the I-League 2023-2024 champion and promotion to the Indian Super League (ISL), the top-tier of Indian football.
