The opening match of the Durand Cup 2023 was played today at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan between the hosts Mohun Bagan Super Giant and the Bangladesh Army Football Team.

The Durand Cup 2023 began with a lot of excitement in the air with 24 teams now taking part in the competition this year. This year, teams are more determined about winning the competition and are fielding their first team for the competition.
The opening match of the Durand Cup 2023 was played today between the Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Bangladesh Army Football Team in a enthralling battle that saw the hosts Mariners hit Bangladesh Army for 5 goals in the match.
Despite a couple of minutes of early pressure from the Bangladesh Army side, Mohun Bagan made a terrific comeback and scored the opening goal of the match when Liston Colaco scored from a brilliant pass from right-back Ravi Rana.
Manvir Singh then converted from the penalty spot after his teammate Lalrinliana Hnamte was brought down in the box by the Army team player. The Mariners went into the tunnel with a 3-0 lead with young and promising striker Suhail Ahmed Bhat scoring the 3rd goal of the first half.
In the 2nd half of the match, Mohun Bagan Super Giant further scored 2 more goals to make it a five-star performance from the Mariners that absolutely delighted the Mohun Bagan fans in number who were in attendance today at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan for the match that kick-off at 5:45 PM Indian Standard Time (IST).
Lalrinliana Hnamte scored the first goal in the 2nd half when he tapped in a brilliant backheel from Manvir Singh of Liston Colaco's free kick.
Mohun Bagan, who fielded a mixed bunch of their reserve and senior team player, who were a livewire today with most of their young players who got the opportunity, proved they are ready to carry forward the legacy of the senior team in the future.
Mohun Bagan's 5th goal of the match came right at the end of the match when Kiyan Nassiri scored a tap in after his first attempt was saved by the keeper and it fell right back in Kiyan's feet, who just tapped in to make it 5-0 for the Mariners.
With that win, Mohun Bagan now stands at the top of the points table of their group with that win. They will next play against the Punjab FC side in their next match on the 7th of August. Meanwhile, watch the highlights of the match below.
