East Bengal FC have got the early season bragging rights over their noise neighbours Mohun Bagan Super Giant after the Red and Gold brigade beat Green and Maroon army by 1-0 in the first Kolkata Derby of the season in the Durand Cup 2023.

There was lot of excitement for the big clash between the two city rivals, mainly because that Mohun Bagan have had beaten East Bengal in the previous 8 straight Kolkata Derby and also down to the fact that Mohun Bagan were playing their first Derby as Mohun Bagan after fans' protest led to the removal of ATK prefix from Mohun Bagan name.
This year's Kolkata Derby was of utmost importance for East Bengal as well, who after a couple of quite spells, finally built a strong enough team to give a fight to the heavy budget Mohun Bagan side.
Nandha Kumar Sekar, East Bengal's new recruit from the Odisha FC was stunning tonight and he scored the eventual and the only goal of the match in the 2nd half of the match.
After a failure to attempt a pass through the East Bengal defence by Manvir Singh, East Bengal initiated a counter-attack and eventually Nandha Kumar Sekar pulled off a brilliant curler that gave no chance to Mohun Bagan keeper Vishal Kaith and found the back of the net.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant had the most ball possession, but they were not lethal enough infront of the goal, most of their chances went over the bar. New signing Armando Sadiku and Jason Cummings failed to put the ball at the back of the net for Mohun Bagan.
With this win, this will be huge welcome moment for East Bengal as that not only did gave them the bragging rights in the Kolkata Derby, but that also keeps them alive in the competition and need to beat Punjab FC to top the group, as for Mohun Bagan, they have the AFC Cup preliminary round matches coming up.
