ISL transfer news: NorthEast United set to sign Ibson Melo

After a disastrous outing in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-2023 season with just 1 win (that too against ATK Mohun Bagan), NorthEast United is looking for a bit of a rework in their team.

And it all started with the backroom staff. First, former Bengaluru FC CEO Mandar Tamhane was confirmed as the new CEO of the club. Then Juan Pedro Benali was brought in as the new head coach of the team.

And, the club has now reportedly completed their first foreign player signing of the season. According to a report by KhelNow, NorthEast United FC is set to sign 33-years-old Brazilian striker Ibson Pereira de Melo ahead of the upcoming season.

Ibson Melo comes with a great experience of having played football in Brazil, Cyprus and Thailand. He represented Ethnikos, Agia Napa, Pafos FC and Ermis Aradippou in Cyprus. He played for Samut Prakan City, Sukhothai FC, Khon Kaen United in Thailand.

He had the most effective spell of his career in Thailand. During his stay in the country between 2019 till 2023, he played 110 matches in the Thai League and scored 45 goals and came in clutch with 10 assists as well.

As for NorthEast United, they had one of the most terrible performance in the history of the club and the Indian Super League where they only won 1 match and lost 17 matches. 2 matches also ended in draw. Their only win of the season came against the eventual ISL champions ATK Mohun Bagan, when they were stricken with injuries.

But now the team looks for a new start under new club CEO Mandar Tamhane and head coach Juan Pedro Benali.
