ATK Mohun Bagan to Mohun Bagan Supergiants (Mohun Bagan Super Giants), the millions of the Mohun Bagan club fans' plea have been heard and on the night when the whole of Kolkata were under jubilation, celebrating the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-2023 Trophy win, the club chairman Sanjiv Goenka dropped a huge announcement.
It was in January 2020 that it was announced that the Mohun Bagan Athletic Club and Kolkata Games and Sports Limited (KGSPL), the owners of the then Indian Super League franchise ATK, have come into terms to a joint venture that was later announced as ATK Mohun Bagan.
Initially supported by Mohun Bagan fans, several moves to promote the team gave brith of anger in the fans' heart, their demand was clear, remove ATK. They wanted the club to be named anything but must exclude ATK, a former Hero ISL champion itself.
As months passed by, the anger was just further raged because of any reason that would hurt Mohun Bagan club fans' sentiment and the identity of the club. The fans decided to boycott the team, went out on streets protesting, held rallies, started to boycott the club's matches.
The Mohun Bagan club fans went through torture of emotions. They were not able to support the club that they love since they got sense. The fans were broken, many rumours arised that the name could be changed, but in the end, it was all but a fluke.
ATK Mohun Bagan to be renamed to Mohun Bagan Super Giants (Mohun Bagan Supergiants)
The hope to see their club back deemed smaller and smaller for the fans. But, out of nowhere, Sanjiv Goenka delivered the greatest news and became hero to the Mohun Bagan fans.
After an intense battle of more than 120 minutes in the Hero ISL Final against Bengaluru FC, winning the Cup in penalty shootout, while ATK Mohun Bagan players were all celebrating and chanting 'Mohun Bagan' and 'Champion', Sanjiv Goenka decided to deliver the big news on big screen itself.
He announced that from next season onwards i.e. after Hero Super Cup, ATK Mohun Bagan will be renamed to Mohun Bagan Supergiants. This did not come out of nowhere, those who are a fond cricket lover knows that Sanjiv Goenka and his group RPSG Group owns an IPL (Indian Premier League) franchise named Lucknow Super Giants, so that's where the Supergiants name come from.
Are the fans happy with the Mohun Bagan Supergiants (Mohun Bagan Super Giants)?
Now the question is, are the fans happy with the Mohun Bagan Supergiants name? Well they truly are. The fans' demand have always been to Mr. Sanjiv Goenka to have any name before or after Mohun Bagan name except ATK, because it was once another Football club and fans didn't like any other club's name being associated with the club they love. After Sanjiv Goenka announced the news to drop ATK, the fans group on Twitter or social media bursted, there was huge tears of joy, the City of Kolkata was painted green and maroon.
Will Mohun Bagan Supergiants play in the Hero Super Cup 2023?
Now many are also even confused whether the club will play the upcoming Hero Super Cup 2023 as Mohun Bagan Supergiants. Note that, since the club is licensed as ATK Mohun Bagan for this 2022-2023 season, they will continue to play as ATK Mohun Bagan, but it is after the Super Cup, more specifically, from the month of June or July. When they will take the field either in Calcutta Football League 2023-2024 season or the Durand Cup 2023 first, they will play in the competition as Mohun Bagan Supergiants (Mohun Bagan Super Giants) or Mohun Bagan SG.
