With the limitation on foreigners set to be enforced for the upcoming seasons of the Indian Super League, Indian club are busy in the transfer market finding a perfect centre-back that could lead their backline in the coming future seasons of Indian Super League.

And there is one name that almost majority of the Indian Super League clubs are trying to get, and that is ATK Mohun Bagan's hot prospect Sumit Rathi.

Sumit Rathi: The Story

The young ATK Mohun Bagan prodigy was born in Muzaffarnagar city of Uttar Pradesh on 26th August, 2001. He began his football journey with AIFF Elite Academy before was promoted to the Indian Arrows team to play in the Hero I-League 2017-18 season.

Rathi then made another jump to join Indian Super League's most successful club ATK in 2018 and after impressing with the reserve team, the young boy was promoted to the senior team of ATK for 2019-20 season, which turned out to be a breakthrough season for him, winning the Emerging Player of the Season award.

The next season he joined India's one of the legacy club ATK Mohun Bagan after ATK merged with Mohun Bagan's football entity. But he was put into a squad which had 2 India international centre-backs in the team in the form of Sandesh Jhingan and Pritam Kotal.

And as a result, the young lad didn't got much game times. In the entire Indian Super League 2020-2021 season, Sumit Rathi just made 6 appearances and got only 263 minutes of match time. 

A huge decrease in match time led to speculations that the youngster is not happy with the game time and wants to move out. And just when the transfer window opened for 2021-2022 season, offers started to come in, but reportedly was nowhere near what ATK Mohun Bagan wants for the boy.

Sumit Rathi just signed a new deal upon joining ATK Mohun Bagan till 2025 thinking that his career will flourish more at the club, but the presence of Jhingan, Tiri and Pritam Kotam really cut short the youngsters match time.

With the new 4 foreigners rule set to be enforced from this season onwards, club would require more quality players to put up a fight for the Indian Super League trophy. And one key area that every teams wants to strengthen is the defence, thus, the clubs believe that youngsters like Sumit Rathi will be a valuable edition to their squad.

As per reports, FC Goa, Odisha FC and Hyderabad FC all made a transfer bid for the green and maroon brigade's youngster and on the other hand, it is also being said that Mumbai City FC approached ATK Mohun Bagan with a loan offer but was straightaway rejected.

A source informed Indian Football News, "3 transfer bid and Mumbai's loan bid was rejected by the management." He further added that ATK Mohun Bagan want their asking price to be met to sell Sumit Rathi, "ATK Mohun Bagan have set a huge asking price which could easily beat the transfer fee paid for Liston Colaco."

He also informed that ATK Mohun Bagan's head coach Antonio Lopez Habas wants Sumit Rathi to stay at the club, "Habas wants Sumit to continue with the club and has informed the same to the management."
