Rise of Gokulam Kerala to become India's best, I League champion

Gokulam Kerala FC has been the most successful club in India for the past couple of years. The club's success started in 2019-20 season in which they won the Durand Cup and the Indian Women's League.

In this season (2020-2021 Football Season), they won the I-League and became the first football club from Kerala to do so. After their I-League success, the club's reserve team won the Kerala Premier League beating KSEB 2-1 in the final.

I-League

The club started the 2020-2021 I-League season with a 1-2 lose against Chennai City FC. The next game against RoundGlass Punjab FC was a narrow 4-3 win and was the beginning of many to come in the season. 

The team won 9, drew 2 and lost 4 out of their 15 games and gathered a sum of 29 points in the I-League this season. The team kept 6 cleansheets out of the 15 games in which their main custodian Ubaid C.K kept 5 cleensheets and Vicky Bhaskaran kept 1. They had the same points as the Goan team Churchill Brothers FC but had a +14 goal difference whereas Churchill Brothers had just +5 which made them automatically the Champions of the 2020-21 Hero I-League. 

The Ghanaian striker Dennis Antwi scored 11 goals for the team which made him the second best scorer in the league behind Bidyashagar Singh who scored 12 goals. The team was the first club from Kerala to win I-League and also to get qualified for the AFC Cup for 2022 season of the competition.

Kerala Premier League

After the I-League success, the club's reserve team participated in the Kerala Premier League (KPL) and won their second KPL trophy after 2017-2018 season. The team was placed in Group A along with Bosco, SAT, Kerala Police, Luca Soccer Club and FC Kerala.

Gokulam Kerala FC's reserve team went unbeaten and topped the group with 15 points to progress through to the semi finals. The Malabarians faced Kerala United in the semi finals and beat them 4-2 on penalties.

The team then faced KSEB who beat Basco FC 5-4 on penalties. GKFC reserves won the final 2-1 against KSEB in which Nishad Roshan and Ganeshan scored the goals for the Malabarians and Viknesh scored a goal for KSEB which gave them the lead until Nishad scored for Gokulam Kerala FC reserves.
