Mohammedan Sporting Club crowned I-League 2023-2024 champions

After a hard-bought season, Mohammedan Sporting Club finally faltered in their very last match of the season, on the day of the crowning as Delhi FC beat I-League 2023-2024 champions Mohammedan Sporting Club at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, also known as Salt Lake Stadium, although it was a much rotated Mohammedan starting XI with the main business already done.

Delhi FC beat Mohammedan 3-1 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in the very last match of the I-League 2023-2024 season with Alisher Kholmurodov, Gwgwmsar Gayary, and Sergio Barboza on the scoresheet for Delhi while the only goal for Mohammedan was a long ranger stunner by midfield general Kasimov.

Despite it being a home match for the champions and a jam-packed stadium at the Salt Lake Stadium, it was Delhi FC who got the opening goal of the match. Uzbekistani defender Alisher Kholmurodov headed home the the first goal for Delhi FC at the 7th minute of the match.

Delhi FC did have further attacks, but Mohammedan Sporting Club equally matches to it and went on their own attacks, but Eddie Hernandez and Kozlov failed to find the back of the net several times, while Delhi FC's goalkeeper Calvin Abhishek displayed great presence in the box to stop Mohammedan attacks.

As a result, on a counter-attack, Delhi FC' young 18-years-old striker Gwgwmsar Gayary, who got his first start of the season after another prolific season in youth football, scored a brilliant right footed goal beating Mohammedan's backup goalkeeper Biaka to make it 2-0 in favour of the away team at the 31st minute. Both the teams went into the tunnel after creating further chances, but both the teams failed to find the back of the net.

In the 2nd half, both the teams again got great number of chances, but both the teams failed to capitalise on that. Eventually, it was Delhi FC's Sergio Barboza Junior who made it 3-0 for the away side at the dying minutes of the match.

Mohammedan fans, although celebrating the Trophy they were about to lift, were hoping for a goal, and it came from their substitute and midfield mystro Kasimov, who took a long range shot that was eventually saves by keeper Calvin Abhishek, but the power of the strike took the over the line, although Beneston Barretto stepped-up and headed to ensure it is a goal, but the ball had cross the goal and then came back.

And at full-time, when the final whistle blew, the away team celebrated their win over the champions, but it was the roar of the Salt Lake Stadium of the Mohammedan Sporting Club fans that was the highlight as the Black Panthers won their first ever national league trophy and a promotion to play against the big boys, joining the city rivals East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, in the Indian Super League (ISL).
