The team has one of the biggest fan bases among the teams in India, the others being the Kolkata giants, SC East Bengal, ATK Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting Club.
The team was quite a successful team during the starting phase of the competition, reaching the finals twice in the first three seasons, only to be handed defeat by the Atletico de Kolkata, with a last minute winner in 2014 and in penalty shootout in 2016.
The team's traditional yellow jersey has been worn by many a names, but of all of them, a number of them have impressed the fans. The club had the services of England's goalkeeper David James and many worldwide famous names.
But a quite a few got to wear the captains arm-band for the Kerala Blasters side in the Indian Super League. Today, in this article, we will take a look at the list of Kerala Blasters FC's captains in the Indian Super League's history, till the 2021-2022 season.
2014 Indian Super League: Hume, Hengbart, Orji, David James
The Sachin Tendulkar owned franchise had opted to go with multiple skippers for the inaugural season of the competition. Canadian striker Iain Hume, French right-back Cédric Hengbart, Nigerian midfielder Penn Orji and England's former International goalkeeper David James shared the captain's arm-band throughout the season.
2015 Indian Super League: Peter Ramage
The yellow brigade went for a complete different strategy this season, appointing former Newcastle central-defender Peter Ramage as the captain.
Ramage was a Newcastle United product, coming through their academy and played in the ISL for the first time in the 2015 season and was handed the Kerala Blasters team's command to his shoulder.
That is the only season Peter Ramage played in the Indian Super League. He featured in 14 matches that season and scored 2 assists for his side. That season, Kerala Blasters finished right at the bottom of the league table.
2016 Indian Super League: Aaron Hughes
Another former Newcastle United Academy product Aaron Hughes this time was appointed the team's captain for the 2016 Hero ISL season.
Aaron Hughes is a former Northern Ireland international centre-back. He joined Kerala Blasters for the 2016 edition of the Indian Super League from the Australian A-League side Melbourne City FC.
Kerala Blasters made a great comeback after last season's performance, as the team went on to finish 2nd in the points table and reached the final, only to handed defeat in penalty shootout in the hands of Atletico de Kolkata.
2017-2019 Indian Super League: Sandesh Jhingan
Club's find and Indian Super League 2014's Emerging Player of the Season, Sandesh Jhingan lead the Kerala Blasters side 2 years in row during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 Indian Super League season.
In those 2 seasons, Kerala Blasters FC failed to find its feet as they finished 6th and 9th respectively. During which, they also kept changing the Head Coach quite frequently.
Sandesh Jhingan could have even led the side during the Indian Super League 2019-2020, if he had not sustained an ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injury, which ruled him out for the entire season.
2019-2020 Indian Super League: Bartholomew Ogbeche
New signing and former PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) player Bartholomew Ogbeche was named the club's captain for the 2019-2020 season of the Indian Super League with Sandesh Jhingan not available due to injury.
Both Bartholomew Ogbeche and new Head Coach Eelco Schattorie joined the Kerala Blasters after having a wonderful season with the NorthEast United the previous edition, having the team to the playoffs for the first time.
However, even though Ogbeche had a great season, scoring 15 goals, the team in particular didn't had a good season as expected. They finished 7th with 19 points from 18 matches. Ogbeche departed the next season to join Mumbai City FC.
2020-2021 Indian Super League: Sergio Cidoncha, Costa Nhamoinesu, Jessel Carneiro
Mohun Bagan's I-League winning coach Kibu Vicuna decided to go ahead with 3 captains this season, they are midfielder Sergio Cidoncha, defenders Costa Nhamoinesu and Jessel Carneiro.
However, Cidoncha was ruled out midway through the season due to injury and the other two shared the captain's arm-band.
Again it was a disappointing season for the Yellow Army as they could only manage 17 points from 20 matches and finished 10th, just ahead of bottom placed Odisha FC.
2021-2022 Indian Super League: Jessel Carneiro
New manager Ivan Vukomanovic decided to continue with Jessel Carneiro as the club's captain in the ongoing season of the Indian Super League.
