In a highly intense match between the Kerala Blasters FC and the home side East Bengal FC in the matchweek 6 of the Indian Super League, it was Kerala Blasters FC’s goalkeeper sachin Suresh who played a heroic role as he saved two back to back goals against East Bengal’s star forward and captain of the team Cleiton Silva.

The matchweek 6 of the Indian Super League 2023-2024 season has been an exciting round of football, and it continued yesterday as the home side East Bengal FC suffered a 1-2 defeat against the visiting Kerala Blasters FC. For the visiting side, it was Daisuke Sakai and Dimitrios Diamantakos who scored in both half of the match.

For the hosts though, it was their captain Cleiton Silva who scored the only goal for the Red and Gold brigade in the last couple of seconds of the injury time of the second half.

It was not a great outing for the East Bengal FC captain Cleiton Silva at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan as the forward’s attempt to score two penalties back-to-back was saved the Kerala Blasters FC’s goalkeeper Sachin Suresh. 

Cleiton Silva stepped-up to take a penalty kick at the 85th minute of the match. In his first attempt, Cleiton took the shot to his right side of the goal, however, goalkeeper Sachin Suresh was alert to it and dived to save the shot. However, the referee signaled for a retake as Sachin had left his line before is allowed to. Silva this time took the shot to his left side, however, Sachin once again read it well and dived to make a brilliant save.

Following his heroic, each and every Kerala Blasters FC fans are talking about the goalkeeper who graduated through the Kerala Blasters reserve team. Let’s take a look at more detailed history of Sachin Suresh’s career so far.

Sachin Suresh started his football career at the Farook Higher Secondary School in Kozhikode, then joined Sports and Education Promotion Trust academy in Kerala to further accelerate his career. He started to play regular football for Thrissur district football and represented the Kerala state team in various youth level competition. He was then signed by the FC Kerala football club to play for them in the year 2017. He started with the U18 side but was promoted to the senior team in the year 2019 to play for the club in the 2019-2020 I-League Second Division.

Eventually Sachin was signed by the Kerala Blasters FC in the year 2020 and was put into the reserve team. He played various youth level competition including the Kerala Premier League. He was then promoted to the senior team ahead of the Indian Super League 2021-2022 season but was a backup option only. Throughout the season, Sachin remained an unused substitute.

Sachin led the line for the Blasters in 2022 Durand Cup since the first team was preparing for the ISL season in UAE. He made five appearance for the team in the competition. He was once again a backup sitting on the bench for the 2022-2023 season of the ISL and continued to play for reserve team in the Kerala Premier League as the captain of the team.

Finally he got his debut for the Kerala Blasters FC senior team in the 2023 Super Cup where he made his debut in a winning cause for the side against Punjab FC. He conceded 1 goal as Kerala won the match 3-1.

Ahead of the 2023-2024 season, Kerala Blasters signed a 3 year contract extension with Sachin. With the departure of the first-choice goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill, who signed with the East Bengal FC, Sachin was made the first-choice keeper starting from the 2023 Durand Cup. He registered his official clean-sheet for the senior team in a 5-0 win over the Indian Air Force in the same competition. 

As of writing this, Sachin Suresh has made 6 appearances for the Blasters in the Indian Super League 2023-2024 season and has conceded 6 goals, kept one clean-sheet. One of his big achievement in this ISL season is that he saved penalties in two matches in a row, first against Odisha FC and then against East Bengal FC. 

Sachin has also represented the India U17 and India U20 national team in his career so far. With just 21-years of age, Sachin Suresh has already made a huge stride in his career and has a long future ahead, potentially go no to represent the senior Indian national team soon.
