The 2023 season of the Calcutta Football League (CFL) is reaching its near end and just about 3 matches of the regular season is left now, after which we will officially know all the 6 clubs who will progress to the Super Six phase of te competition.
The Kolkata's football league, the Calcutta Football League (CFL) is one of the most recognised regional league in the country. The league features three oldest clubs in Indian footbal scene, Mohun Bagan Super Giant (football department of Mohun Bagan Athletic Club), Mohammedan Sporting Club and East Bengal FC.
The Calcutta Football League is also one of the most oldest football league in India and in Asia. This season, the Calcutta Football League is being played in a different format than normal.
Ahead of the new season, the teams from CFL Premier A and Premier B division was merged together, thus a total 26 teams were divided into 2 groups of 13 teams each. During the regular league phase, all the teams to play a total 12 matches, after which, the top 3 teams from both the groups would qualify for the Super Six, the Championship phase of the competition.
So far, all the matches in Group A have been wrapped-up with East Bengal, Bhawanipore and Kidderpore being the 3 clubs to progress. On the other hand, Mohammedan Sporting Club and Diamond Harbour FC have qualified from B. The only slot is remaining is being competed between Kalighat MS, who are currently third as of writing this, and Mohun Bagan Super Giant.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant have 20 points while third placed Kalighat has 24 points. Mohun Bagan Super Giant still has 3 matches left while Kalighat have already played their 12 matches.
How Mohun Bagan Super Giant can qualify for Super Six round of Calcutta Football League (CFL) 2023?
The fight for the third team to progress to the Super Six round is between Kalighat MS and Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Kalighat have finished all their 12 matches and must hope Mohun Bagan don't overtake them, who have 3 matches left.
For Mohun Bagan Super Giant to qualify for Super Six, they will have to overcome first Peerless Sports Club. If Mohun Bagan managed to get a victory in this match to be played on Sunday, 10th September, they will either need to win one more match or score loads of goal in the Peerless match to overtake Kalighat's goal difference and earn one point from their the remaining 2 matches.
If they fail to win this match, then they will have to beat Mohammedan and Diamond Harbour in their next two matches. Shortly explained, Mohun Bagan Super Giant atleast need 4 points and score loads of goals to overtake Kalighat MS' goal difference, or win their 2 match of the remaining 3 matches.
