Durand Cup 2023: Parthib Gogoi scored a hat-trick as NorthEast United FC beat Shillong Lajong

The match number 2 of the prestigious Durand Cup 2023 was played today, 4th August, between the hosts NorthEast United FC and their neighbours Shillong Lajong at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati.

The first half began with lots of rain effecting the play a lot. The first 25 minutes we saw some great football between both the sides. But once the pitch got wet enough, that's when NorthEast United pounced on the opportunity and scored the first goal of the match.

A shot was taken from left-side by NorthEast United FC player, but the Shillong Lajong keeper couldn't gather the ball and fumbled it right onto to onrushing Parthib Gogoi's feet, who then chipped the ball over the keeper for the opener at the 25th minute.

Romain Philippoteaux scored the 2nd goal for the NorthEast United side from the penalty spot after himself earning the penalty kick when he was brought down by Shillong Lajong player when Romain was trying to dribble past the players in Lajong's box.

The young Indian striker Parthib Gogoi added further 2 goals beside his name to complete his hat-trick. He scored both the goals from behind the goalkeeper tap in goals.

Shillong Lajong tried their best to find the back of the net, but they failed miserably. Despite creating some good momentum and scoring chances, they lacked a quality striker in front of the goal that can give them the much needed breakthrough. As thus, NorthEast United in the end won the match by 4-0 at their home ground.

NorthEast United looked really good in this match against their I-League opposition Shillong Lajong, but their real true test under head coach Juan Pedro Benali will be against the FC Goa team on the 12th of August while Lajong will also play against Goa on the 8th of August.
