Match number 8 of the Durand Cup 2023 was played today between the hosts Mohun Bagan Super Giant and newly promoted Indian Super League (ISL) club Punjab FC at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan.

The 2023 edition of the historical Durand Cup has got off to a flying start as there has been lots of action in all the matches that have been played so far in the competition.
Today, the match number 8 of the competition was played between two Group A sides, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who picked up a 5-0 win in their opening match against Bangladesh Army Football Team, faced off against Punjab FC, who played their opening match of the competition this season.
After fielding considerably a youth side in the first match, Mohun Bagan brought in more of their first team players for this match just before the big Kolkata Derby on the 12th August vs East Bengal.
Throughout the match, Mohun Bagan Super Giant were the superior team in the match over Punjab FC, notably in the first half. As a result, Mohun Bagan took the lead in the match in the 23rd minute of the match when Punjab's Melroy Assisi scored a own goal.
It was a brilliant run down the right side from Manvir Singh, cutting in by the line. He tried to square the ball to Suhail Ahmed Bhat since it was an accute angle for him to score, but, Assisi who slid in, tapped in the ball into his own net.
The first half ended with the Mariners leading by a goal. In the 2nd half, Punjab FC were more commited to towards attacking, but Hugo Boumous doubled the lead for his side.
After a brilliant play on the left-side from Petratos and Liston Colaco, the latter whipped a cross that the Punjab goalkeeper fumbled while defender failed to clear it and Hugo Boumous with ease put it at the back of the net with his left-foot.
The Mariners considerably slowed down the game and Punjab FC, despite getting some good chances, Mohun Bagan keeper Vishal Kaith, last season's Golden Glove winner, was up to the task and made some crucial saves.
In the end, Punjab FC failed to find the net and the match ended with 2-0 win for the home side. With that, they remain at the top of the points table with the upcoming match being the Kolkata Derby vs East Bengal on the 12th August. Watch the highlights of the match below.
